The end of the fight that was the opener of the event was changed hours before by WWE Chairman Vince McMahon according to Dave Meltzer. Apparently it was planned that Universal Champion Roman Reigns would be the winner and then his opponent Rollins would enter directly into the main event. But the plans were cancelled.

“Seth Rollins was originally at the Rumble, which is another story,” Meltzer said. “I don’t know if you’ve heard, but both Rumbles were changed over and over and over. In fact, Seth’s match with Roman was also changed several times. Essentially, the original ending was that Roman Reigns was going to beat Seth Rollins. I don’t know what was going to happen from there. The basic gist of the Rumble show was that Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar is the big fight of the year and everything about the Rumble was to accentuate that as the big fight of the year. So they both had to look very, very strong.”

Bryan Alvarez of Wrestling Observer Radio asked Meltzer himself about the main reason for canceling Roman’s victory. At this, he said the following:

“Because Vince changed the ending because when the decision was made to take all those chair shots at the end, Vince thought it was too much to destroy Seth Rollins.” So Shane was really putting pressure on Rollins at the Rumble, but when he gave that beating, the feeling was that it would be really stupid to take that terrible beating and then go into the Rumble.”

“The feeling was that chair shots were more devastating than victory, so they went for chair shots.”
