Ecuador’s victory against Venezuela (1-0) and, above all, Chile’s victory as a visitor in Asunción, against Paraguay (0-1), took Colombia out of the direct qualification zone, in which it has only been in three of the 12 rounds of the current qualifiers (see graph). And it could end this day outside of Qatar 2022 partially, if Uruguay beat Argentina today in Montevideo.
However, Colombia’s accounts remain the same: winning the three remaining games at home, against Paraguay (this Tuesday); against Peru, in January 2022, and against Bolivia, in March of next year, and defeat Venezuela as a visitor on the last day of the tie.
With those 12 points, the National Team would reach 28 and would be in the classification zone, at least, for the playoffs. It has the advantage that there are still direct duels between the teams with which the classification is fighting, such as, for example, Chile vs. Uruguay from the last round of qualifying, in Santiago, or like the matches that Peru will have against Ecuador and Paraguay in Lima and against Uruguay as a visitor.
The goal is missing
The great concern of Colombia is that it continues with the lost goal: it has already been 376 minutes without scoring and that, in the final stretch of the tie, is very serious.
And the second thing, that the antecedents in the current tie in Barranquilla are not good: they have lost 9 points out of 18 possible.
That is where the two wins from a year ago and the matches that were not won in previous qualifiers, such as those in La Paz and Asunción, begin to weigh.
