Inmujeres assures that there is interest in opening a shelter for women victims of violence in Salto | Daily Change

By Karina De Mattos.
Today marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls, in Salto today, in addition to the posters of the women who were murdered in the national territory, we carry the poster of Nataly who was murdered here, and we must focus on our department and how to fight against this latent danger that is femicide.
RESPONSE ON GENDER VIOLENCE
In this context, we spoke with the journalist Mónica Bottero, director of the National Institute for Women, and we asked her if there are possibilities of opening a shelter in Salto for women victims of violence. “Salto is a very critical point for the response in gender violence, for Inmujeres and for all public actors that we have an obligation, that is very clear. As soon as we have the possibility of opening a new center, it will be in Salto. We have just inaugurated the fifth 24-hour care center for women victims of violence in San Carlos. We are just beginning, with an opening in our second year of management, which is not common and the truth is that we could not already be thinking about the next one. But if there is a next one, it will be in Salto. Because I have been seeing a lot of response needs, and the coast in general and Salto in particular have very strong needs ”.
TRANSITIONAL SOLUTIONS
The 24-hour center is not a definitive answer, nor is it essential for the fields of gender violence. Because if the first thing we do is institutionalize a young woman, generally with small children, after receiving her in a home, then what do we do? 24-hour centers are always temporary solutions when there is no other way. First, it is best to get the abuser out of the home. Second, if it is the woman who for different reasons has to find another housing solution, the first is not a 24-hour center, it is a social, family, friends, community network. It is never a good solution to institutionalize immediately. Now we understand that a housing response, even if it is an emergency, is necessary. We are looking at the budgetary possibilities to give that answer.
REFERENCE CENTER
“We are going to have it with the Reference Center for Social Policies that MIDES will inaugurate in the coming weeks. We talked about it with the director Tarusselli, there will be a very emergency space, to respond to the women of the city of Salto in the first hours. I think that we have to consider a slightly more ambitious answer. A 24-hour center costs a million pesos per year, it is not a huge figure for a national budget but it is for an infrastructure like Inmujeres. We should have a supervision and logistics system, a little more robust to be able to think of a sixth 24-hour center, that if there is going to be a next one we have to think that it is in Salto. Many times it depends on the circumstances because if another quartermaster comes tomorrow and says they are willing to pay 70 percent of the cost and we will have to change the department ”.
A PROBLEM FOR EVERYONE
“All citizens are aware that gender violence is a problem for everyone, the public, the entire community, therefore it is important that whoever knows a woman in this situation, or herself, if she is feeling signs of control of your life, of your money, insults, because sometimes violence is not just blows, there are other forms of violence that are also very cruel, do not hesitate to ask for help ”.
