Alex Cora reveals who his mom’s favorite player is

Doña Iris Amaro has always been a proud mother to her two baseball sons – Alex and Joey Cora – and has celebrated their accomplishments like no other.

They both ended up playing in the Major Leagues.

But it turns out that neither of them was the favorite player of the family matriarch, who also gave birth to Lydia and Aimee.

Alex revealed the secret of Doña Iris on the occasion of the induction ceremony to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, in New York.

“My mother gave birth to two major leaguers, and we are just her children,” Cora told reporters during a virtual press conference in Boston yesterday, referring to him and his brother.

“His favorite player is Derek Jeter. So we’ll leave it at that, “he added with a laugh.

Jeter was inducted into the Hall of Fame yesterday, after a wait that was prolonged due to the covid-19 pandemic.

The legendary former shortstop and captain of the New York Yankees coincided for several seasons with the Cora brothers, particularly when Alex played for the Boston Red Sox and Joey, with the Seattle Mariners.

So Dona Iris knows a lot about baseball.

Jeter fell a single vote from entering the hall of immortals unanimously.

Although he went on to win five World Series, Alex has also won his own, one as a player (2007), one as a bench coach (2017, with the Houston Astros) and one as a manager (2018, Boston).

Meanwhile, Joey continues to impart his coaching knowledge since 2004 (with the Chicago White Sox, Miami and Pittsburgh) as he waits for the opportunity to follow in his brother’s footsteps.

Likewise, Dona Iris cannot be happier.

Boston closes in on the wild card

Meanwhile, his son Alex keeps the Red Sox in the wild card position heading into the 2021 Major League Baseball postseason.

Boston – second in the American League East Division – is in the wild card with just half a game ahead (80-62), alongside the New York Yankees (78-61). Lurking are the Toronto Blue Jays (76-62).

The Red Sox come from yesterday defeating the leaders of the East, the Tampa Bay Rays (88-52).

Today they begin a series of six games on the road, three against the Chicago White Sox and the Seattle Mariners.
