Sports Writing, Jul 18. Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Bobby Brown was suspended for the first six games of the 2022 season by the NFL on Monday for violating its performance-enhancing substance use policy.
The punishment will not limit Brown to participate in his team’s return to training this week, nor for the preseason games that the Rams will start on August 13 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
The NFL did not report the substance for which the defender was sanctioned, but stressed that the suspension will be served without pay.
Bobby Brown will be able to return to the active list of his squad until next October 17; If he is required by coach Sean McVay, his reappearance could come in the game against the San Francisco 49ers on October 30.
The 21-year-old player arrived in the NFL last season after being selected in the fourth round of the 2021 Draft by the Rams, a team with which he participated in 22 snaps in the 10 games he played.
He was inactive during Super Bowl LVI as Los Angeles beat the Cincinnati Bengals, but confidence in the rookie was on display during this year’s free agency when the Rams didn’t draft a defensive lineman.
The team’s defensive coordinator, Raheem Morris, has Brown as a backup to Greg Gaines, a nose tackle or middle guard, whose main duties are to prevent offensive runs through the center of the defense, as well as to pressure the quarterback.
During the 2021 season the Rams’ run defense was number six. Their leader is eight-time Pro Bowl defensive end Aaron Donald, who spoke last week about the importance of rookies on the team.
“We want to find ways to continually improve the technique of the younger guys who haven’t been on the field as much yet, continue to develop their depth and their ability to be dominant in the running game,” Donald explained.
The loss of Bobby Brown will open the door for Elijah Garcia, a 24-year-old rookie, to fight to win the trust of Raheem Morris and “coach” Sean McVay. EFE
