NFL: Sean Payton, new Denver Broncos coach for next season

The Denver Broncos announced Tuesday that they have reached an agreement with Sean Payton to be their new head coach ahead of the 2023 NFL season.

The Broncos had to negotiate with the New Orleans Saints to hire Payton, who resigned from that team in the middle of last season while still under contract.

In exchange for the coach, the Saints will receive a first-round pick from the 2023 Draft and a 2024 second-round pick.

Payton comes to replace Nathaniel Hackett, fired last December after he accumulated a record of four wins and 11 losses in his first season with the team that did not qualify for the ‘playoffs’.

The coach born in San Mateo, California, boasts among his achievements having led the Saints to win the Super Bowl XLIV in 2010.

Payton began his career as a coach in New Orleans, a team in which he has been in two stages, the first was between 2006 and 2011, he returned in 2013 and concluded in 2021.

He has a record of 152 games won and 89 lost. In 15 seasons, he qualified his team nine times for the postseason. He played for the National Conference (NFC) title three times, of which he won one.

Payton’s mission will be to make the Broncos a contender again who aspires to qualify for the postseason, for this he must help the adaptation of quarterback Russell Wilson, who was the team’s star signing last season.

Wilson, 34, a champion with the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII, came to the Broncos on a five-year, $245 million contract.

Denver accumulates seven campaigns without advancing to the ‘playoffs’. The last time he did it, he won Super Bowl 50 over the Carolina Panthers, at that time Peyton Manning was his quarterback and Gary Kubiak was the head coach.
