ANDhe COVID-19 outbreak in the Cleveland Browns has gotten worse.
Both quarterback Baker Mayfield and coach Kevin Stefanski tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday and will possibly miss Saturday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Cleveland deals with an outbreak of cases late in the season and battling for a place in the playoffs.
Stefanski’s positive was announced by the team, while Mayfield’s was confirmed to the Associated Press by a person familiar with the situation. The person asked not to be identified because other tests are yet to be carried out.
The recent positives came the day after the team placed players, including star wide receiver Jarvis Landry and offensive line starters Wyatt Teller and Jedrick Wills Jr., on the COVID-19 casualty list.
The Browns (7-6) are likely to lose more players to the vital game against the Raiders (6-7), one that faces teams bidding for the postseason in the recent American Conference.
Despite the outbreak in Cleveland, an NFL spokesman told the AP that “a change in the game’s schedule has not been contemplated.”
The league has dealt with a significant spike in cases this week. 65 cases were reported between Monday and Tuesday, the highest number in a two-day period since the start of the pandemic.
Mayfield, in a campaign marred by injuries, was one of the new positives that were unveiled on Wednesday. On Monday, Mayfield and his wife, Emily, attended a Christmas event with children.
The quarterback has had to deal with a broken left shoulder for most of the season. If he can’t play on Saturday, veteran backup Case Keenum will be the starter.
