University basketball seems to see a light at the end of the tunnel and the ABE League authorities are doing everything possible so that activity in both divisions can resume this semester. For this reason, the Student Basketball Association held the Extraordinary Congress at the UPAEP Eagles facilities, where various options were proposed to make the return of university basketball this semester a reality.

The ABE’s plans to return to the staves

At the press conference, the hosts were Juan Manuel Aguirre Langle, Director of Physical Education and Sports of the UPAEP, and Yair Olano, director of the ABE League. Although a few months ago some matches could be played within the so-called ABE Cup, the intention is that in this semester it will be possible to return to the regular calendar for both Division I and Division II in both branches. Here are some of the important points discussed at the conference:

  • The key date is February 10, the last day for institutions interested in playing to send their letters and confirm their interest in playing.
  • According to the number of institutions that agree to play, another meeting will be held to define the calendars. For now, there is no certainty of which format will be played, but there are proposals on the table for both divisions.
  • In Division I, it could be played in a round robin round robin system and also the option of dividing the universities into two zones. In Division II it is contemplated to play by geographical zones.

  • With the teams confirmed, the season could start between March 4 and 10.
  • It would be sought to maintain the Big Eight phase to define the champions. Let us remember that the venue for the tournament was for the ITESM Monterrey.
  • In the coming weeks, with greater certainty regarding what is happening with the pandemic situation, decisions can be made regarding the health protocols that will be applied.
  • Confirmation from UDLAP is awaited to find out if it will participate this season.
  • There will be no relegation in this tournament.

Hopefully the conditions are better and the young university students have the opportunity to fully return to the staves, some institutions have already returned to work because the intention and dream of the majority is that the ABE League can develop smoothly in this new reality.
