Huskies lose another guard: Muhl has a foot injury

UConn women’s basketball sophomore shooting guard, Nika muhl, is out with a foot injury, coach Geno Auriemma said Wednesday in a media call. It is another blow for a team that already has the guards Paige Bueckers Y Azzi fudd marginalized by injuries. Muhl’s problem dates from a foot injury he suffered last season.

Auriemma said she didn’t know how long Muhl would be out – who has played 5-1 in every game this season for the Huskies, averaging 10.5 minutes. The No. 3 Huskies face Georgia Tech on Thursday (ESPN3, 7 pm ET) and UCLA on Saturday (ESPN3, 1 pm ET).

“You’re being cautious so it doesn’t turn into worst case … a broken foot,” Auriemma said. “How quickly people heal depends on the individual. That will be the determining factor.

“But I would think it would probably be three weeks. Maybe more, maybe less. Who knows if we’re lucky.”

The Huskies haven’t had much luck so far this season when it comes to injuries. UConn announced Tuesday that Bueckers, the team leader in scoring, assists and steals, would be out for six to eight weeks with a tibial plateau fracture in her left knee. She was injured in the final minute of Sunday’s 73-54 win over Notre Dame. Muhl played 14 minutes in that game, with six points and two rebounds.

In terms of Bueckers getting injured so late in a match where UConn had a commanding lead, Auriemma said injuries can happen at any time and he can’t train in constant fear that someone might get injured.

“You can’t train like this. You just can’t,” Auriemma said. “I’ve had so many injuries that happened at the start of games, in the middle of a practice where no one is even near you. So I can’t sink there.

“I can go back and forth and relive it all. Obviously, [la lesiĆ³n de Bueckers] It happened on that play, but I think something must have happened [antes de eso]. You read all the stories about how this is usually a traumatic injury caused by some kind of collision or something. “

UConn now only has three healthy guards: the fourth-year players Christyn Williams Y Evina westbrook and the rookie Caroline ducharme. Guard Saylor Poffenbarger left the program in November and transferred to Arkansas.

Fudd, the nation’s number one recruit, is out with a foot injury. In addition, the third year base, Aubrey griffin, is marginalized with ankle and back injuries.

“Aubrey tried to play [el martes]She wasn’t really successful, and she didn’t practice today, “Auriemma said.” So I’m not entirely sure what her status might be either Thursday or Saturday. We will see day by day how that evolves.

“We’ve been through a lot of unfortunate things, but that’s part of the sport. There is no coach who has come out unscathed with these things. The last couple of days have been very, very difficult for the entire program.

“You have to weather the storm. It’s just going to be a long storm. They say hard times create strong people. I feel like we will come out on the other side much better than how we are coming in.”
