THE CUBAN PRESS SHARED CONCERN about the public in the stadiums (+PHOTOS)

The Cuban official press has echoed a problem that we see becoming more common every day in the stadiums of our country. The newspaper Vanguard of Pinar del Río published a series of images taken during the subseries between Vegueros and Piratas where the uncontrolled non-compliance with sanitary measures is clearly observed to prevent the epidemiological situation in the country from reaching levels where it is impossible to continue housing the public.

From allowing capacity higher than expected, to the irresponsibility of many fans who do not understand that social distancing is essential to avoid contagion, they are reasons for alert for everyone. From the personal experience of the undersigned, during the first clash of the particular series between Las Tunas and Avilanians at the José Ramón Cepero, I was able to see, first-hand, how the crowds of people, in addition to the fact that each of the positions where the public had to sit with the required distance, they could be observed throughout the length and breadth of the stands, without taking into account the high risk that this implies.

The images in Captain San Luis, unfortunately, are not exclusive to that western city, during the television broadcasts in the Mártires de Barbados de Bayamo, we could see more of the same: crowds, inappropriate use of the mask, especially in children and teenagers. Social indiscipline is not only limited to the public, similar things happen in dugouts; players without masks who interact with others without any protection.

Going back to the day I witnessed the clash at the Cepero, I was able to notice that first a call was made from the local amplification to maintain social distancing and for each fan to sit in the places marked for that purpose. An hour later, realizing that it was impossible for people to comply with the rules, they simply called for the correct use of the mask, keeping your distance, at that point, was asking for pears from the elm tree.

It is necessary to remind the Cuban public that for two years it was not possible to enter the stadiums. We cannot forget how difficult it was to see the empty stadiums on television or for the players themselves, who, as several confessed to me at the time: sometimes it felt like a training session and not like a real game.

Baseball without fans is like food without salt, no matter how hard we try it doesn’t taste the same; but in order not to go back, everyone, and I mean everyone, the public, managers and ballplayers, must do our part. Return to the deserted stands in a tournament where the competitive quality is getting lower and lower; is to condemn it completely. The hobby is the only one that, to this day, keeps the passion alive; Let’s not let that go to waste.
