Cincinnati Reds outfielder Tommy Pham said Saturday that he accepted a three-game suspension for slapping the San Francisco Giants outfielder Joc Pedersen on the cheek over a fantasy football dispute before Friday’s game.
The suspension began with Friday’s game, after Pham faced and hit Pederson while the Giants warmed up in the outfield. The couple had to be separated.
On Saturday, Pham said the dispute also stemmed from a text message Pederson sent to the fantasy league group chat in which Pham says Pederson disrespected his teammates in the games. San Diego Padresfor whom he played last season.
“I slapped Joc in the face,” Pham told reporters on Saturday. “He said some m— that I don’t approve of. I had to address them.”
On Friday, Pederson said he was accused of cheating by placing a player on injured reserve and replacing him with a free agent in a fantasy football league. Pederson said the player he put on the disabled list had been ruled out for that week, making it a legal move. He said that Pham had executed essentially the same maneuver with his own team.
Pederson said he had no prior notice that Pham might confront him during the series in Cincinnati.
Pham threatened violence to settle scores on the field with Luke Voit from San Diego in April, challenging the slugger to a fight after Voit injured the Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson with a hard, ugly slide on the plate.
