Steelers name Pat Meyer as new offensive line coach

The assistant spent the last two seasons in the same role with the Panthers.

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have hired Pat Mayer as his new offensive line coach.

Mayer joins the Steelers after spending the past two seasons in the same position for the Carolina Panthers. Mayer replaces Adrian Klemwho left before the end of last season to take up a position with the University of Oregon. Chris Morganwho held the position on an interim basis after the departure of clemmwas hired by the Chicago Bears at the beginning of this month.

Mayer assumes control of a unit that suffered through much of the 2021 campaign. Steelers finished near the bottom of the NFL in most offensive categories, including points (21st), yards (23rd), rushing yards (29th) and yards per rushing attempt (29th).

There could be a significant turnover in the unit, again. veteran left guard Trai Turner and right tackle Chuks Okorafor They will be free agents. the rookie center Kendrick Green he had a hard time at times and was demoted towards the end of the campaign, in favor of J. C. Hassenauer.

The Steelers are in the process of finding a successor for the quarterback Ben Roethlisbergerwho retired last month after 18 seasons.

pittsburgh is the fifth team NFL for Mayer. He also served as the offensive line coach for Los Angeles Chargers from 2017-19 and bears in 2013 and 2014. He worked as a sports operations consultant and as an offensive assistant with the buffalo bills in 2015 and 2016.

Mayer played offensive line for Colorado State in the early 1990s and spent a stint with the arizona cardinals before playing in the Arena Football League.
