League of affiliates, why not?

The idea of this article arises from whether it is lawful for subsidiaries to play promotion phases and then resign. Understanding that they can clearly play those phases because they have won it on the court, for their players it is a very good competitive experience, but when they win, they obtain that right to promote and then resign they are distorting the competition in a certain way, harming the team that he wants to go up and that he has been framed with them in the same group.

Not long ago the subsidiaries of Valencia and Estudiantes achieved promotion to Silver, although he ended up resigning. But you don’t have to go too far back, because a few weeks ago the EBA Finals were held, with three of the five teams that obtained the right to be promoted to Silver being subsidiaries; of them, only Valencia has expressed wanting to play in Silver, the decision of Fuenlabrada and Estudiantes being in the air (in the case of the latter it seems that they will not consume after the relegation to Gold of the first team).

The prolific white quarry

There are other teams that despite their great achievements and almost always qualify for the Promotion Phase, in the case of Real Madrid, renounce to play them (often due to the coincidence of dates with other tournaments), not detracting from such phases.

The question seems obvious: Why not a league of affiliates? Why not a league of subsidiaries in which the matches are the same calendar of the first team (let’s imagine a utopian world without coronavirus and in which the dates do not dance so much for it). The Espoirs championship has been played in France for years, reserved for ProA affiliate teams and players under 21 years of age, while the affiliates of ProB teams play minor divisions such as NM2 (the fourth division, our EBA) and NM3. However, in Germany it is like in Spain: the subsidiaries play in the ProB (LEB Plata) and Regionalliga (EBA), while there is a league for juniors (there are three years for the two from here) which is the NBBL U19, as David Gómez (former Peñas) reminded us well, who was training there.

The oldest of the place will remember that initiative of ACB and FEB that lasted a few years and that was the U20 Circuit. There came to be two series (A and B) and the teams played on certain designated dates in venues, in groups of 4 teams and playing three games from Friday to Sunday, all against all (then the results were added). Players such as Nacho Llovet, Javi Vega, Xavi Rabaseda and Pere Tomàs, among others, came to participate in said championship.

If we look at each ACB team, almost all of them have a presence in FEB leagues through a subsidiary, with some exceptions. We review it:

FC Barcelona
LEB Silver

Meritorious promotion to Gold for the Barça subsidiary, with Sergi Martínez playing the playoffs alongside Badji, Badio and Marcos scoring at a high level, with sporadic contributions from some juniors. On Friday the swaps of B culé were made official with the descendants Força Lleida, who will maintain their place in LEB Oro, and CB Cornellà, who will continue one more course in Silver. After a decade in LEB Leagues The Blaugrana subsidiary will play in the EBA League, a decision that comes after evaluating “different aspects that include the training of the players and the cost of the category,” according to the club itself.

CB Gran Canaria
LEB Silver

In a more complex season, the Claretian affiliate reached the quarterfinals of the playoffs. With Diop, Balcerowski, Kljajic in the first team, the yellows multiplied with Javi López, Steinbergs and Rubén López, with Jean Montero as the main reference. It remains to be seen what will happen next year, as there have been rumors of not removing the team in Silver, although the club denied it a few days ago. Regarding the squad, Jean Montero seems that he will emigrate to the US, Javi López finishes the U22 cycle and there is not a litter of juniors of the last level to play in Silver.

Valencia BC
EBA League

Total ascent of the taronja, with only one game lost in the entire season. A team full of key players (Ferrando, Jiménez, Henningsson) and with some juniors covering the second unit. It seems that his jump to Silver will occur.

Basketball Fuenlabrada
EBA League

Good job from José Luis Pichel with his boys, always being in the upper zone to obtain promotion. A solid block with players such as Rodijs Mačoha, Argentine Juan Fernández (selected by the senior team) and Juanjo Santana, who were completed by Álvaro Lobo’s seniority and the strength of young people such as cadet Bassala Bagayoko. There is also Njegoš Sikiraš, who came out on loan again this year in the middle of the campaign (Melilla, Oro).

Students Club
EBA League

In a rare year in which several players were in the first team in a single dynamic, the student affiliate qualified for the Final Round and was promoted again. The growth of Longarela and Suárez, the reappearance of Alderete and the quality of Levy joined the arrival of Arroyo and juniors such as Domínguez and López. They must be added to those loaned in LEB Plata (Diego Alderete and Alex Tamayo).

real Madrid FC
EBA League

A team top full of juniors and usually a steamroller for rivals. Players like Núñez, N’Diaye and Spagnolo are outstanding in EBA, with the support of Solé as teacher (each time with less minutes). The white box yielded this course to Nakić and Tišma.

CB Miraflores
EBA League

Good quarry work that is paying off little by little. “Older” players like Ángel Infante and juniors who helped like Dāvids Grīnbergs joined the trident formed by Kareem Queeley, Tote Alonso and Oliver Bieshaar (until the latter went to Silver).

Obradoiro CAB
EBA League

Another team that has been doing good seasons with Denís Pombar. The Barreiro, López and Nico González helped U22 referents such as Gerard Jofresa and Martín Fernández, with juniors like Hernández or Eluku with minutes.

Saski baskonia
EBA League

Having passed through Silver a few years ago, the Baskonista subsidiary had individual progression under the guidance of Miguel Ángel Hoyo, with junior heavyweight players such as Sow, Cissoko and Diakhaté, with Álex Harguindey (2002) as the only senior, despite the fact that the results groups did not accompany. Meanwhile, Savkov and Hanzlík were important in their first senior year, living a great year with Iraurgi (promotion to Gold and Cup champion).

Club Joventut Badalona
EBA League

Brave bet of La Penya, with players who live their first senior years in Silver as linked in the Prat (Kraag, Helmanis, Domènech, Vinícius, Maronka), who will be replaced by the juniors who play in the EBA subsidiary (Bosch, Vázquez, Nogués), accompanied this course by Almuní, Grau and a young point guard who made his debut in ACB as Roger Martí, all of them with experience in EBA.

Real Betis Basketball
EBA League

With Magassa playing in the first team all season, at EBA, with Dong Hao as senior, the junior team took the lead with the García, Roveres and Herrera, although without obtaining great group results.

CB Malaga
EBA League

With three players linked to LEB Plata’s CB Marbella (Sánchez, Ismael Tamba and Godspower), the juniors did a good course at EBA, with players like Pablo Tamba, Rafa Santos and Pierre Waly Sène taking the weight.

UCAM Murcia
EBA League

The Murcians changed their project, passing players like Bērziņš and Martínez (to Basket Cartagena) and betting on elite training groups, arriving good players. U22’s like Isma Corraliza, Tomás Pereyra and Alex Antetokounmpo were joined by juniors like Yiğit Mestoğlu, Wilhelm Falk and Noah Churchill Sørensen, among others.

Basket Zaragoza 2002
EBA League

Great work of the hands with the quarry. With Generation Z in the first team, the Zaragoza entity has yielded LEB teams to Ander Urdiain (Gold), Aitor Etxeguren (Gold) and Raúl Lobaco (Silver). For their part, the youngest have grown up in EBA; we are talking about junior and cadet players such as Daniel Arjol, Josep Fermí Cera, Álvaro Martínez, Gustav Knudsen or Aday Mara.

Basketball Manresa
EBA League (linked)

He has had players linked to CB Artés (EBA) such as U19 international Marc Peñarroya, Pau Treviño and juniors Toni Naspler and Musa Sagnia, as well as a Lazar Mutić who left the Manresa discipline in April to join the TAU Castelló de LEB Oro.

CB Canarias
EBA (linked) / 1st National

With several players on loan such as point guard Alberto Cabrera (Zornotza, Silver), the team opted to have EBA linked in the ranks of RC Náutico Tenerife: the interesting Danilo Brnović, Fischer and a good remnant of juniors like Ivanković and Díaz-Graham . For its part, the subsidiary achieved a month ago promotion to the EBA League from the Canarian championship, but has resigned from it.

BC Andorra
1st National (linked)

It is difficult to keep young players in their discipline, as academic reasons lead them to leave the Principat. The Pyrenean team had a subsidiary until last season. Players without a contract left, but those who follow the track (such as Aaron Guzmán and Bruno Bartolomé, this year in Silver). Yes, Alexis Bartolomé (Gold) and Hugo Bartolomé (Silver) were on loan, as did Martí Obiols (EBA). Without a subsidiary, he had players in the ranks of the Sedis (Catalunya Cup), such as Albert Pons and Alex Peral (in double dynamic by also participating with the ACB).

Bilbao Basket
1st National

He lost against Leioa the possibility of going up to EBA from the Basque First National League and that his promises were blanked out in a more competitive environment. In the MIB affiliate, players such as Barandalla, Betolaza, Pedrosa, Miguel Ruiz and Del Val, some already debuting in ACB.

Gipuzkoa Basket Club
No affiliate

They did not present a subsidiary team or related players.

With so many teams in each category, FEB has lost a bit of competitiveness at each level. Perhaps the excuse that it was a good place for young people to take off has lost steam and more when more and more teams choose to bet on their juniors and the EBA has lowered its level with so many teams. Maybe it is time for a change and for Spain to be a pioneer again and bet on a league of subsidiaries.
