SANTO DOMINGO, RD.- The mayor of La Vega Kelvin Cruz will preside over the Organizing Committee of the First TBS Champions Cup Basketball Tournament, set for the first week of February.

The announcement was made this Tuesday by the engineer Rafael Uribe, president of the Dominican Basketball Federation (Fedombal), after communicating with the vegan mayor and he accepted what he called an exceptional distinction,

Uribe stressed that the mayor of the Cult and Olympic City of La Vega meets all the requirements to lead this Organizing Committee, for also being a great promoter of provincial and national basketball, as a sports leader and municipal leader.

For his part, Cruz stated that he feels honored and grateful for taking him into account for such an initiative for the benefit of Dominican basketball.

“This will be a novel event for basketball and one that strengthens the top national tournaments, since players from all over the country will be able to exhibit themselves,” Cruz exclaimed.

He said that he will speak and motivate the mayors of each province and municipality of each participating team to support them and encourage the promotion of basketball in their regions.

He pointed out that they will make efforts to get transportation for the fans of each team to attend the matches that are held during those five days.

The leader stressed that it is the first time that a championship of this nature has been held in which eight champion clubs from their different provincial superior tournaments will participate.

The Champions Cup will be held over a period of five days, from Wednesday February 1 to Sunday February 5 at the Professor Virgilio Travieso Soto Sports Palace, the first three days being the preliminary stage of the eight teams -which will be divided in two groups of four teams each.

He valued that the fourth day (Saturday) the semifinal round will be played (classifying the two best places in each division) and the fifth (Sunday) the final will be played.

Uribe stressed that the teams that will see action in this first version are from the National District, represented by the Bameso club; from La Romana by the Virgilio Castillo (Chola) club; La Vega through Hostos Park; and from San Cristóbal through the Laguneros.

As well as a team from Moca (Espaillat) with Don Bosco; Puerto Plata, whose representation will be the Correcaminos de la Parte Baja; from Santiago the club Gregorio Urbano Gilbert (GUG); and from San Francisco de Macorís, the San Martín de Porres club.
