The New York Yankees placed the right Jameson taillon on the 10-day disabled list with a partial tendon tear in his right ankle, while the reliever is unlikely to Zack britton He will pitch again through 2023 after undergoing Tommy John surgery, according to manager Aaron Boone.
Boone said Taillon felt ankle sore toward the end of a start Monday when he threw a three-run ball in seven innings in an 8-0 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. He received a PRP injection this week and was in a walking boot Wednesday and Thursday, Boone said.
Taillon hopes to remove his boot on Friday, and there is a chance that he will only miss one outing. Boone added that there is no concern that Taillon will make the injury worse by putting pressure on him.
“It sounds worse than it is, but your body will tell us what it is capable of handling,” Boone said.
Britton had surgery by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles on Wednesday. They reconstructed the UCL in his left elbow and removed a bone fragment. Boone wasn’t sure of a timetable for Britton’s return, although the typical recovery from Tommy John’s surgery is 12 to 18 months.
Britton, 33, was 0-1 with a 5.89 ERA in 22 games this season and last pitched on Aug. 19. New York has already clinched the $ 14 million option on Britton’s contract for 2022. He can become a free agent after that year.
Taillon is 8-6 with a 4.41 ERA in 27 starts in his first season with the Yankees. Before this year, he hadn’t pitched since May 1, 2019, while with the Pittsburgh Pirates due to Tommy John surgery.
