Silver Bats: These are the winners

The best hitters in the Major Leagues were honored Thursday night with the announcement of the winners of the 2021 Silver Bates awards at both circuits.

The defending champions Braves led the way with four winners, tied for the second-most by a team in a season, behind only the 1980 Cardinals (five). Among those who won it for the first time, were the Dominican Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Shohei Ohtani, while Freddie Freeman, the Dominicans Fernando Tatis Jr. and Juan José Soto, and the Venezuelan Salvador Pérez (4th time he won it) were among those who repeated after taking it in 2020.

The Silver Bat Awards recognize the best offensive producer at each position and in each league, and the winners are decided by a vote of the manager and three coaches from each team. The votes are based on a combination of the player’s production reflected in the statistics, as well as the general impressions of the coaches about the offensive value of each player. The best designated hitter is included in the American League, while the best hitting pitcher is rewarded in the National League.
