Sho Time! Ohtani at MLB The Show 22

Following his historic 2021 campaign in which he was named the American League Most Valuable Player, Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani will appear on the cover of the MLB The Show 22 video game, Sony announced Monday.

The cover ad was memorable, on a huge 3D screen in New York City’s Times Square. Following a countdown that ended at 12 noon local time, some of Ohtani’s highlights and the new game’s cover art, which includes footage of him pitching and batting, were shown.

The fans you can pre-order MLB The Show 22 ahead of its official release on April 5. The game will be available on PlayStation 4 and 5; Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One; and — for the first time — Nintendo Switch.

In 2021, Ohtani posted a .965 OPS with 46 home runs, eight triples and 26 stolen bases, an offensive performance that alone would have earned him MVP consideration. But that was only half the story. The 27-year-old made 23 starts on the mound with the Angels, posting a 3.18 ERA and striking out 28% of the batters he faced.

The AL MVP honors added yet another accolade for Ohtani, who had already won the AL Rookie of the Year award in 2018. Before signing with the Angels, he was a sensation on the Japanese pro circuit from 2013 to the 2017.

Ohtani is the latest in a long line of stars to be placed on the cover of the game. Last year, the Dominican Fernando Tatis Jr, became the youngest player to be on the cover of The Show. Among those who have appeared there since the game premiered in 2006 are Puerto Rican Javier Báez, Bryce Harper, Aaron Judge, Ken Griffey Jr., Josh Donaldson, Cuban Yasiel Puig, Venezuelan Miguel Cabrera, Andrew McCutchen, Mexican Adrián González, Joe Mauer, Dustin Pedroia, Ryan Howard, David Wright and Dominican David Ortiz.
