Minaya will be scouting advisor for MLB

It was announced Wednesday that Omar Minaya will be an advisor to Major League Baseball amateur scouts, both in the United States and internationally, continuing a long and successful career as a baseball executive.

“Omar is a well-respected figure throughout our sport and will continue to help build future initiatives in the amateur arena,” Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. “We are pleased to be able to count on his knowledge and experience as an executive of several MLB teams. We welcome Omar and can’t wait to start looking at his contributions.”

Minaya, who became the first Latin American general manager in the Major Leagues in 2002 with the Expos, began his career as a scout with the Rangers in 1984.

“For four decades, scouting has been my true passion,” Minaya said. “I am honored to be able to serve Major League Baseball by ensuring that the scouting industry remains one of the vital aspects of this game. With the evolution of baseball, scouting has changed and I’m excited to be a part of that industry development.”

After his internship as general manager of the Expos, the Quisqueyano assumed the same position with the Mets before the beginning of the 2005 campaign. New York experienced a 12-win increment in that year and then it was 14 in 2006, when the club won its first NL East title since 1988.

Minaya was in charge of the Mets’ baseball operations department until 2010, before being named the Padres’ vice president of operations. He held that position through 2014, including a brief stint as interim co-general manager.

More recently, Minaya has held various positions with the Mets and within the Major League Baseball Players Association.
