Correa explodes and Astros split double heat

DETROIT – Yordan Alvarez and Carlos Correa hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning and the Houston Astros beat the Detroit Tigers 3-2 on Saturday night to split a doubleheader.

After winning Game 1 3-1 and ending the Astros’ 11-game winning streak, the Tigers took a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning of a seven-game game.

José Altuve started the sixth for the Astros with a double off reliever Micheal Fulmer (4-4). With two outs on the board, Álvarez hit a board that tied the game.

After two pitches, Correa sent the ball past the Tigers bullpen for Houston to take the lead.

Nomar Mazara doubled off Lance McCullers Jr. with one out in the sixth for Detroit, but Ryne Stanek came in to retire the next two batters. Ryan Pressly retired the batters he faced in the seventh for his 12th save.

In the first game, Zack Short’s first major league home run ended a fifth-inning tie for Detroit.

Casey Mize (5-4) improved to 2-0 in four starts. He gave up a run on two hits and two walks in six innings. He struck out five to beat the Astros for the second time this season.

Jose Cisnero pitched the seventh for his third save.

Short, called up as Detroit’s 27th man for the day, had the first extra-base hit of his career with a double in the third and homered off Hambrel Valdez in the fifth.

Valdez (4-1) lost for the first time in six starts this season. He allowed three runs on six hits in a six-inning complete game. He struck out six and gave no passports,

For the Astros, the Venezuelan Altuve 2-1 with a run scored. The Cubans Gurriel 3-1; Alvarez 2-1 with one scored and two RBIs. Puerto Ricans Correa 3-1 with one scored and one produced; Martín Maldonado 3-0.

For the Tigers, Venezuelans Cabrera 3-0; Harold Castro 3-1 with a run scored. Dominican Nomar Mazara 3-2 with an RBI. Puerto Rican Willi Castro 3-0.
