BALTIMORE – Willi Castro hit a double and a triple to drive in three runs Tuesday in a game that included a spectacular collision between two outfielders for the Detroit Tigers, who eventually beat the Baltimore Orioles 9-4.
Center fielder Derek Hill and left Akil Baddoo were stunned after colliding with each other while chasing a fly ball from Anthony Santander in the eighth inning. Hill made the catch, and although they both left the match, they were able to do so on foot, after a tense pause.
Miguel Cabrera hit a single and got a ticket. The Venezuelan followed two home runs from reaching 500, with two games remaining from this Detroit tour.
Casey Mize allowed three home runs and didn’t survive the fifth inning, but the Tigers took the win thanks to building a notable lead early.
The Orioles have lost six games in a row and have allowed at least nine runs in each. The last team to accept nine runs in six straight games was Kansas City, September 4-10, 2002.
Detroit’s bullpen looked solid. Kyle Fukhouser (6-1), Jose Cisnero, Michael Fulmer, Buck Farmer and Gregory Soto did not tolerate a Baltimore run after Mize worked 4 1/3 innings.
Keegan Akin (0-6) had six runs and seven hits in three innings.
For the Tigers, the Venezuelans Cabrera 3-1 with a run scored, Victor Reyes 1-0 with a run scored, Harold Castro 1-0. The Dominican Jeimer Candelario 5-1 with a run scored and two RBIs. Puerto Rican Castro 4-2 with one run scored and three produced.
For the Orioles, the Mexican Ramón Urías 3-0. The Venezuelan Santander 4-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs. The Dominicans Maikel Franco 4-1, Jorge Mateo 4-1.
