In Carolina “they have no intention of changing McCaffrey at this time”

In Carolina, 2021 did not turn out as expected. His year ended with seven losses in a row to record a lousy 5-12 mark. This might have had another outcome if RB Christian McCaffrey had managed to stay healthy, but it was not the case; McCaffrey missed 10 games throughout the season due to multiple injuries that landed him twice on Injured Reserve. Still, the Panthers “have no intention of trading McCafrey at this point,” or so GM Scott Fitterer thinks:

“We sat down for 30, 45 minutes and we tackled all of those things,” Fitterer commented on Monday. “I told him what was true and what was not. I think there was a report in November that we were actively trying to change it and that was not true. However, what I did say to him is ‘hey listen, as general manager I’ll take any calls.’ Call and make any offer you want. That doesn’t mean we’re going to change it. That does not mean that we are selling you. [Pero] I’ll listen”.

“I see Christian as a fundamental piece of this team. We are a better team when he is on the field. He is one of the elite players in the NFL. I would love for you to be here, but I will never stop taking a call. If someone calls and offers something crazy, yes, you would consider it. There are no intentions at this time to change Christian McCaffrey, ”Fitterer concluded.

During the regular season, before the deadline to perform trades, there was a wave of rumors that the Panthers were trying to find a recipient to land McCaffrey; There was even talk of Carolina considering offering her star running back in a trade to acquire Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. However, in the end, nothing materialized and everything was left to mere speculation.

The only certain thing momentarily is that McCaffrey, due to various mishaps, has only participated in 10 games over the last 2 seasons. This 2021 he only registered 99 carries for 442 yards and a minimum in his 5-year career of 1 touchdown. However, it is undeniable that when healthy the Panthers are a better team and, heading into the 2022 season, they still have to decide whether or not McCaffrey enters into the organization’s plans. What should they do in Carolina with Christian McCaffrey?

Lions fire Anthony Lynn

It was previously reported, but it has finally been made official. Via Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, This Monday the Lions decided to dispense with the services of offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn after only one season in the team, as confirmed by HC Dan Campbell in a press conference: “I felt that this is the best for both of us,” Campbell commented, to via Dave Birkett of Detroit Free Press. “He has been a true professional. He works hard and gave us everything he had. He is a professional ”.

“It just didn’t fit. We never found our rhythm, “said Campbell about a Lynn who never knew how to lead the Lions offense to a successful conclusion, which this 2021 finished as the eighth worst in average points per game (19.1), as the number 31 in conversions of third down (34.7%) and also finished from the middle down on average per game for total yards, passing yards and rushing.

In fact, although Lynn was serving as OC, after Detroit’s 0-8-1 start to the season, Campbell decided to start commanding the plays himself, downgrading Lynn’s power into consideration: “I’ve been in Dan’s place, And if I was 0-8 and I need to fire up my team, then as an offensive guy I probably would have done the same, ”Lynn noted last November. “He would be a hypocrite if he did not agree with what he did.”

Thus, Lynn, who from 2017 to 2020 was HC of the Chargers, is now unemployed. For their part, Campbell and the Lions must begin the search for a new offensive coordinator, either by digging the market or promoting someone from within the organization. However, Campbell must first decide whether or not he will continue to command the offensive plays in 2022, although he mentioned that “there are several factors at play” and that “he is in no rush to make that decision.” Who should be Detroit’s new offensive coordinator?

Cam Newton would like to stay in the NFL, even as a substitute

In more news from the NFL, after a 2021 season that can be described as a real carousel for QB Cam Newton, the former league MVP pointed out this Monday, through Nick Carboni of WCNC, who is still confident in his ability to perform at a high level, but is also willing to accept a substitute role on a contending team heading into 2022: “I’m not going back for 5-12. I can tell you that now, ”Newton commented.

The 32-year-old quarterback added that he had an adjustment period at the Panthers as he was “not used” to serving as a backup, but he understood the situation and will take it into consideration as he heads to free agency next March: “I think I’ve shown my value to the people I needed to prove it to, ”Newton said. “Me answering this now, just one day after the season, I don’t know what that looks like. But can I tell you if I still have a lot of football left? I want to play? Yes. But under the right conditions. “

This season Newton finished with 69 completions, with a 54.8% ERA, for 4 TDs and 5 INTs, plus 47 carries for 230 yards and another 5 touchdowns. He’s probably going to have a hard time finding a starting or backup spot on any contending team next season, so just maybe the last of Newton’s in the NFL has already been seen. Will Newton make it back to the league in 2022?
