After an unforgettable 2020 season in which they earned the “honor” of having the #1 Draft Pick, the Jacksonville Jaguars began 2021 by appointing head coach: the successful college-level coach Urban Meyer came to “put order” in team, rebuild the franchise and lay the groundwork to exploit the talent of projected No. 1 overall pick and dubbed generational talent, Trevor Lawrence.

First month, first controversy

The head coach hadn’t even been in the job for 30 days when the first off-the-field Jaguars news event arose: Chris Doyle was named fitness coach despite multiple accusations of racism in Iowa, so just a few hours after presenting it, he had to resign so as not to be a distractor in the new era that was being built in Jacksonville

The 2021 Jaguars Draft

If the first pick was going to be Trevor Lawrence, the second was to be taken to shore up some needy area or bring in a first-round talent with the 25th pick, instead they took RB Travis Etienne, who while he looked like a good player, he was not even close to what Jacksonville needed, taking into account that with the season that James Robinson had had, the arrival of Carlos Hyde left the position more than covered.

We later learned that Urban’s idea for Etienne – a short but strong RB and lots of leg power – was to turn him into a WR. Either way, neither happened, as he sat out the entire year in just the second preseason game.

Minshew–Lawrence Competition

In what seemed like an easy decision like naming the Draft’s jewel as the starting QB, Meyer took it to other levels not only by not giving the QB1 job – and all the repetitions that that entails – to Trevor Lawrence, but he dared to declare that he had to take the situation to the limit and that Gardner Minshew had everything to start the season as a starter… so that a few days later he traded him to Philadelphia

Next Circus Show: Tim Tebow

Just before spring training began, the Jaguars stunned with the signing/retirement call of Tim Tebow; not because they were activating a player who had been off the field since 2015, but because they were bringing in the former QB to “reinforce” the team as TE, a madness that ended after the first preseason game.

the video scandal

Just in week 4, just after his fourth consecutive loss against the Cincinnati Bengals, due to the proximity to Ohio, a city in which his family lives and he had made a career as HC of the Buckeyes, he asked permission to visit them and enjoy with their grandchildren from the game that they were going to have that weekend.

Instead, he was caught in a city bar with a woman dancing on his lap; Immediately after the images were released, he denied everything and said that it was just a girl who was passing by, who wanted to invite him to the dance floor, but that all the time he was with his grandchildren … in a restaurant.

The best moment of his season: the curse of the Manning Cast

In week 9, a week after Josh Allen, QB of the Bills, had attended the well-known program of the Manning brothers, they enforced an interesting curse that said that the team of the active player who attended the program, lost the following week. .

And so it was, with a full Josh Allen (the EDGE and the Jags), who intercepted a pass from the “other” Josh Allen, made a sack and recovered a fumble from the other and more famous Josh Allen, with which the Jaguars managed the victory, a reprieve and some of the respect they no longer had off the field.

The worst moment of the season: the unsustainable circus

Urban’s last thing with the team was simply falling out with his staff, whom he called “losers” and “soft,” after arguing with WR Marvin Jones in a situation where Trevor Lawrence intervened to make amends, not without first snubbing him again.

Once the atmosphere in Jacksonville reached a boiling point, unbelievably, the reason Shad Khan found for firing Meyer in week 13 and not paying him the rest of his contract was an HC altercation with kicker Josh Lambo in preseason, a kicker who was only with the team a few weeks before being cut, all because Urban Meyer kicked him because in his mind he “could kick it anytime” because he was the coach.

First Pick of 2022, hope for the Jaguars?

At the end of the season, a pathetic 3-14 was the team’s record, cementing himself as the worst in the NFL for another year and securing the first overall pick in 2022.

The worst thing is that Trevor Lawrence suffered a terrible blow in his progress as a QB, wasting a first year with very modest numbers, just 3,600 passing yards (17th in the league) with 12 TDs (28) and 17 INTs (first along with with Matthew Stafford). Additionally, no RB or WR on this offense exceeded 850 total yards.

With a lot to improve and hoping to find the HC that manages to guide a young team, talented in certain areas, but without confidence and motivation in the medium term, beyond just a handful of victories in the season, the Jaguars are one of the teams most hopeless of 2021 and possibly this year too.
