Sports Writing, (EFE) .- Kyle Shanahan, coach of the San Francisco 49ers, an NFL team -the professional American football league- welcomed the permanence of Jimmy Garoppolo, his team ensures a ‘quarterback’ (organizer of the game ) starter as a substitute.
“We have a starting quarterback as backup; this was to say ‘OMG’, Jimmy Garoppolo is available as backup quarterback. There is no way this is bad for our team,” Shanahan said at a news conference.
Last Monday Garoppolo restructured his contract to stay with the 49ers for one year in exchange for 6.5 million dollars, plus half a million more in bonuses, an agreement that will allow him to be free to choose where to emigrate in 2023.
In 2021, the 30-year-old quarterback led San Francisco to the NFC final where they fell to the Los Angeles Rams, in a game in which he was criticized for the interception he suffered on the last play of the duel.
For the 2022 season, the starting quarterback will be rookie Trey Lance, chosen in last year’s draft, who accumulated praise in the preseason until the last game, in which the 49ers offense was left at zero in the loss against the Texans.
With Garoppolo remaining on the team, Shanahan acknowledged that Lance, who is 22, will have valuable support off the bench.
“It’s Trey’s team, it’s nothing against Jimmy, we made that decision a year ago, and we’re sticking with it, but we recognize the quality of Jimmy. This agreement makes sense for him and for us, there is nothing for us to think about, ”he expressed.
The ‘coach’ made reference to the fact that Garoppolo was available in the market to be signed by any team, but everyone let him pass.
“The rest of the league had a chance to get it and I feel very lucky that they didn’t,” he said.
Garoppolo came to the 49ers from the New England Patriots in 2017, a team where he was a backup for Tom Brady, considered the best player in NFL history.
In five seasons with the 49ers he has a record of 31 wins and 14 losses as a starting quarterback; he completed 66 touchdown passes and had 38 interceptions, adding 11,162 yards.
He also led San Francisco to Super Bowl LIV which they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.
In week one of the 2022 season, the San Francisco 49ers will debut against the Chicago Bears on September 11.
