Yankees rush to Luis Severino’s opening Saturday

TAMPA, Florida – The Dominican pitcher Louis Severino He won’t make his scheduled start on Wednesday, in an exhibition game against the Toronto Blue Jays, but remains in the New York Yankees’ plans to be the No. 2 regular-season starter.

In an interview with ESPN on Tuesday, Severino said he feels good and very close to the form that helped him contend for the AL Cy Young Award in consecutive years.

“We’re fine, we come to these training sessions prepared,” Severino said. “I think I’m very close, physically [de la forma anterior]my arm feels great,” he added.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Severino has experienced “general discomfort” and therefore will do a bullpen session instead of starting against Toronto. The manager reported that Severino will now start Saturday against the Atlanta Braves at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa.

“He was a little sore from his last performance. We just want to slow him down a little bit,” Boone said.

Severino, 28, was the Yankees’ best pitcher in 2017 and 2018, but a pair of injuries, including Tommy John elbow surgery, limited him to 18.0 innings the past three years. In his first two starts of the exhibition season, Severino allowed seven hits and seven runs in 3 2/3 innings.

The Quisqueyan pitcher downplayed the results of his first appearances in the Grapefruit League.

“Every time I get on the mound, what I want is to come out healthy. When the season starts, the results will be there. The pitches will come in due time. That’s why this is called training, to work on improving your pitches,” Severino said. .

Severino said he wants to hit four innings in his next spring outing, to get as close to proper regular-season form as possible. Manager Boone said Severino is still planning to start Game 2 of the regular series on Saturday, April 9, against the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium.

“I think four innings would be ideal, but the most important thing is to come out healthy, even if it’s only three innings,” Severino said.
