Vladimir Guerrero Jr. receives the Juan Marichal award

Vladimir Guerrero Jr., became the first winner of the Juan Marichal Award, which since 2021 recognizes the most outstanding Dominican player of the year in the Big leagues from United States.

He received 97 of 100 first-place votes and 594 points to beat the San Diego Padres shortstop, Fernando Tatis Jr., and the outfielder for the Washington Nationals, Juan Soto.

Tatis got two first-place votes, 55 second, and 326 points, while Soto got the other first-place vote, 34 second, and 44 third, for a total of 305 points.

Guerrero Jr., 22, hit .311 with 48 homers, 111 RBIs and 123 scored in a fabulous season that earned him to be one of the main candidates for the award Most Valuable Player of the American League to be announced in two weeks by the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA).

Guerrero Jr. nearly snagged the triple batting crown and ended up leading his league in home runs, runs, OBP (.401) and slugging (.601), and was second in hits (188) and sixth in walks (86).

Other merits

It is recalled that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Phillies ranger, Bryce Harper, were recognized with the Hank Aaron Award, which decorates the most outstanding player on offense both in the National League as well as the American League.

The winners were chosen by a panel made up of members of the Hall of Fame. Craig Biggio, Ken Griffey Jr., Chipper Jones, the dominican Pedro Martínez, Eddie Murray, John Smoltz and Robin Yount, plus fan votes on MLB.com.

Guerrero, 22, is the youngest player in history to win the Hank Aaron Award and the fourth Blue Jays player to do so, joining Puerto Rican Carlos Delgado (2000), fellow Dominican José Bautista (2010, 2011) and Josh Donaldson (2015).
