The Players Association and the office of Major Leagues – MLB held this Tuesday a new meeting, where they mainly discussed the topic of minimum salary of the players.
Journalist Jon Heyman reported that at Tuesday’s meeting between the Players Association and the MLB, they mainly talked about the minimum salary for players in the Major Leagues, which is currently $570,000, but in today’s meeting, the MLBPA made a proposal for the economic benefit of those who provide entertainment on the field of play.
Proposal and result
- The MLBPA proposed a minimum salary of $775,000, compared to $570,500 currently earned by minimum wage earners
- The MLB made a counteroffer of $615,000 for players with 0 to 1 year of service time
- Additionally, MLB also proposed a $10 million bonus fund for eligible players prior to arbitration. The union had proposed a $105 million bonus fund. So the concept has something in common, the quantity is very, very different.
- On the other hand, MLB also withdrew its proposals to eliminate salary arbitration for any group.
Without a doubt, both the MLBPA and MLB understand that younger players deserve a bigger slice of the pie, salary-wise.
There is no deal today. There was never going to be a deal today.
The takeaway: A pre-arb bonus pool gets the best young players paid more. Players wanted it, and it’s a good thing for them. Players are laughing at the $10M offer. It’s far too low. Negotiations will change that.

So the gap is now $775K to $615K. Minimum salary affects about half the players each year but doesn’t represent the potential total $ difference of free agency and luxury tax (CBT) issues https://t.co/amYXzPxgtX

While a minimum salary increase to $775K from $570.5K sounds like a lot, both sides understand younger players deserve a bigger slice of pie. Management source says MLB (now at $600K) can move here w/ negotiation. Surprising stat (AP): 46% of MLB players made under 500K in 2021.

Little by little progress is being made in the talks between both parties and possibly the agreement for the 2022 Major League season is getting closer.
