MLB: Tigres Catcher refused to go to Minor Leagues and opts for free agency

The Detroit Tigers announced this Monday that the lanky receiver Grayson greiner was not claimed in the absolute waivers and has declined an outright Minor League assignment in favor of free agency. Greiner had the right to do so, as a player with more than three years of service in the Major Leagues.

MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz had projected a modest $ 800K raise for Greiner, but the Tigers have great depth at receiver and Greiner effectively didn’t bid on today’s play:

Detroit already acquired Tucker Barnhart on the first day of the offseason to serve as its starting catcher, and the Tigers also have Jake Rogers and Eric Haase on their roster of 40, not to mention the one taken in the second round of the 2020 Draft. , Dillon Dingler, who hit the 2021 Class A pitchers before battling for a promotion to Double-A.

Greiner, 29, and 1.98 meters tall, was the Tigers’ third-round pick in 2014, but hasn’t hit much in parts of four major league seasons. In 2021 he will be remembered more than anything for being hit in the face by a ball.

From 2018-21, Greiner received 477 plate appearances in the majors, but posted just a .201 / .274 / .309 batting line with a strikeout rate of 32.1%. He’s been slightly better at Triple-A, where he hit .233 / .314 / .347 in 388 plate appearances:

Behind the plate, Greiner has been slightly below average, but acceptable, in terms of framing and also boasts a hefty 31% career catch steal rate.

I had the chance to attend the 2013 World Classic in Arizona, USA, albeit as a fan. Apart from this beautiful sport, I love basketball, where I have also narrated games and even an NBA friendly 10 years ago, but I carry baseball in my veins. My cycle there ended in July 2019 and after a few days, El Debate gave me another opportunity to work and opened the doors for me again. That is how I came to Al Bat, where I have been since 2019 as a web journalist.
