MLB: The amount of money that Rafael Devers asks the Red Sox is revealed

The Boston Red Sox have resumed talks about a contract extension with third baseman Rafael Devers, but the sides are still far apart in negotiations, according to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman. During spring training, Devers reportedly turned down an offer similar to Matt Olson’s eight-year, $168 million offer with the Braves.

Heyman has heard that the Red Sox have surpassed $200 million with their most recent offer, but that Devers is seeking more than $300 million for 10 years or more. Devers’ stance is understandable, as Atlanta signed third baseman Austin Riley to a 10-year, $212 million extension in August.

The two third basemen are similar players, but Riley wasn’t in a position to become a free agent until after the 2025 season. Devers will be eligible to try his luck on the market after the 2023 season, because what has more of an advantage in talks.

As Heyman points out, the Red Sox don’t have a strong position in their talks with the 26-year-old Devers, since losing another star player developed within the organization would make the club look bad, which traded Mookie Betts to the Dodgers in the 2020. The Red Sox could also lose Aruban shortstop Xander Bogaerts, who may opt out of his contract this winter.

I’m a fan of the San Francisco Giants, number one defender of Barry Bonds, and hater of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Fernando Tatis Jr., Juan Soto and Ronald Acuña are the future of baseball, Mike Trout is overrated, and the Astros deserved to have the World Series taken from them for their cheating. Besides baseball, I also enjoy football, flag football, basketball, and just about any other game that involves a ball or ball. I’m also an amateur musician, a penniless gamer and very nerdy.
