Houston Astros: 3 Surprises They Could Give In Free Agency

The Houston Astros could land a surprise hit in the market with a powerful offensive bat from free agency for the 2022 season.

With Carlos Correa still in free agency and wondering whether Houston will dare to make a huge offer that breaks his protocols, the lineup appears to need another power bat.

Kyle Tucker, José Altuve, Yuli Gurriel, Yordan Álvarez, Michael Brantley and Alex Bregman complete a good sextet but the rest of the lineup looks far from this level.

Martín Maldonado catching and with Chas McCormick as CF, with José Siri and Jake Meyers when they return as an alternative.

With a luxury tax margin awaiting a new deal, the Astros could launch an operation in search of a new bat.

The market options in the SS are limited, but in the outfield they could incorporate one of these 3 surprises, counting on Kyle Tucker occupying the CF full time:

Kris Bryant: Bryant’s option may be tricky because of his high, long-term contract, but he can contribute in the 2 outfields, even though he has played most of his career in 3B. A proven bat that would give a lot of depth and solidity to the lineup to maintain his dominance in the West Division.

Nick Castellanos: Defensively it is not the best option to have Brantley or Álvarez-Tucker-Castellanos, despite the high level that the lineup would have.

Michael Conforto: A left-handed hitter and could help in the outfield, he could also look for a short contract to revalue, after rejecting the Mets contract.

Having 2 established designated hitters (Brantley and Alvarez) pushes other names like Kyle Schwarber or Jorge Soler away from the options.
