The Atlanta Braves signed their most expensive free agent earlier this week, signing the mighty Jordan Luplow for one year. It marks just the second free agent signing of the offseason, as the Braves remain cool on that front. The club still excelled in other areas, with catcher Sean Murphy in a highly successful trade with the Oakland A’s.
But for the most part, the club has remained stagnant as division rivals bring in superstar-caliber free agents. And it still doesn’t matter because, as currently built, FanGraphs projects that the Braves win more games in 2023 than any other team in both leagues:
After a premature end to the season, the Braves are still expected to be one of the best teams in baseball in 2023 because the front office has done an excellent job retaining core roster pieces. Even going into the offseason, most of the Opening Day roster was set in stone with the only legitimate questions being shortstop, left field and the final spot in the rotation.
The Braves currently have the second best odds of lifting the Commissioner’s Trophy next year, behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers. When a team has most of its impactful players locked up for the next five years or more, offseasons tend to be quiet.

For the most part, Atlanta knows what their team is going to be like. Thus, Las Vegas knows the club will be one of the best in the game, factoring in possible comeback campaigns for Ronald Acuna Jr. and Ozzie Albies. Of course, these projections were made before the Mets signed Carlos Correa. Still, I’m not sure one player, awarded a superstar, will propel New York from No. 4 to the top.
