This Sunday, player Andrés Ayón Broown, one of the glory of Cuban sports, passed away in Havana.
According to the INDER National Athlete Care Commission, the player’s death occurred in the “Miguel Enríquez” hospital, in the municipality of 10 de Octubre, due to a heart attack.
Ayón, 84 years old, played in the Cuban professional league with the Marianao and Almendares teams; He won two series in the Caribbean, shone in the Minor Leagues up to AAA level in the United States, and was on the verge of the Major Leagues in the early 1960s.
In Mexican ball, he obtained several titles and leaderships, celebrated three MVP awards and gave two games of zero jit zero runs, one of those perfect.
Journalistic sources indicate that Andrés added 367 wins among the professional leagues of Cuba, the United States, Mexico and Nicaragua.
In Cuba, he also stood out as manager of the Industriales team between the 1982 and 1985 seasons, and collaborated in baseball development projects on the island.
During the 1982-1983 season at the head of the capital team, he concluded in fourth place with a record of 31 victories and 16 defeats. In 1983-1984 he rose to second place (49-25).
He concludes his work in the next contest, 1984-1985, with sixth place and a balance of 44 games won and 31 lost. “I ended up because I did not agree with the selection of the managers of the national teams, and neither with the procedures for choosing the players. I did not want to be part of some injustices that were committed,” he said in an interview.
Ayón was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Mexico, since he played for 14 seasons in the Mexican league (on three occasions he won more than 20 games) and achieved a balance of 169-98, with 21 saves and 3.15 clean average. He pitched a perfect game in 1972 against the Sultanes de Monterrey.
In eleven seasons in the Minor Leagues he won 105 games and in his four years in the Cuban Professional League he achieved 21 wins and 11 failures. In total, he finished his sports career with 234 wins and 148 losses.
Still in 2018 he was still among the coaches of the National Series.
The main authorities of INDER and the Cuban Olympic Committee have expressed their condolences at such a regrettable loss.
