Brian Cashman: ‘We suck right now’

NEW YORK – The general manager of the Yankees, Brian Cashman, he does not beat around the bush for the performance of the Bronx Bombers.

“We suck now,” Cashman said before Tuesday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels, who won 5-2 at Yankee Stadium. “As bad as we can be.”

However, for the third time this season, Cashman offered his support to manager Aaron Boone and the coaching staff.

“This is not an Aaron Boone problem,” Cashman added. “This is not a problem for the coaching staff.”

Cashman passed the blame for Boone to himself.

“It is easy from my chair to say: ‘let me throw something overboard to satisfy the masses’. It is more difficult to stick to what you have because you believe in it,” he said. “These people care. They are working hard. They are really good at what they do. We are not getting the results. I am the head of baseball operations. That is more for me than for them,” he said.

The Yankees have four straight losses, including a three-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox. They are in fourth place in the AL East. Cashman said the team could be a seller rather than a buyer at the trade deadline if its performance doesn’t improve.

Owner Hal Steinbrenner has not been happy with the team’s struggles so far this year, Cashman said. The Yankees currently have the second-largest payroll in the sport at $ 142,556,795 behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, who spend the most at $ 215,958,616.

“Everybody is frustrated by this,” Cashman said. “Anyone who cares about this franchise, nobody cares more than the owner because they have invested in it. It is a legacy, and he is not getting what he deserves or what he paid for. So he is also frustrated,” he said.
