The San Francisco Giants are being the surprise of MLB And very few people gave them a chance to even smell the postseason this year, being in a division with two real blunderbusss like the current World Series champs, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the super hardened San Diego Padres, who had an offseason that made them favorites. Now ready starting the final stretch of the season, the Giants have hit the ground running.
According to FanGraphs data, the San Francisco Giants are the first team in all of MLB to officially qualify for the postseason in 2021, having within their own calculations a 100% probability of reaching October, although it has not actually been made official that those of the Bay have assured their place in the playoffs no matter what happens between now and the end of the regular season.
However, the same portal does not have them anywhere near as favorites to win the World Series, since according to their data, they have a 4.2% probability of winning the Fall Classic, compared to the Los Angeles Dodgers or the Yankees of New York, who despite having a worse record than them, have probabilities of 22.6% and 10.2% respectively of being champions.
The Giants have led their division almost uninterruptedly since the start of the season, and while they have mathematically secured their place in the playoffs, the Western championship may slip away thanks to the pressure the Dodgers have put in in recent weeks.
