For some time now, awareness has been raised about the terrible working conditions in which the vast majority of players find themselves minor league, where even though MLB is a business worth billions of dollars, the teams and the league are unwilling to give their branch players fair pay and treatment. In almost all teams the situation is similar, but there are places where they are worse than others, like in the Toronto Blue Jays.
Several anonymous players who are part of the Blue Jays organization spoke to the organization “Advocates for Minor Leaguers” about the lousy salaries that the organization pays them, with one player mentioning that they can’t even afford to eat and in many cases, they end up “paying” to work leaving their finances in the red.
For what they pay us, some of us are only making $ 200- $ 500 a month after paying rent and taxes. Once you include the cost of living as food and other services, many of us literally pay to play.
The minimum wage in the United States is around $ 15,000 annually, while minor league players mostly earn less than that, with Triple-A players earning salaries of $ 14,700 on average, while Double-A and Class. A are even smaller.
According to a study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, you can’t live anywhere in America on a salary less than $ 26,225, with minor league players literally living below the poverty line.
