Addison Russell will play with the Acereros de Monclova in the Mexican Baseball League, the most recent chapter of his time in independent leagues.
There was a time when Russell was considered one of the most promising prospects in the MLB. He was even an important part of winning the 2016 World Series with the puppies.
After that celebration nothing was the same for him. Since 2017 he began to have problems with hitting and then faced more serious situations, this time off the field of play.
In October 2018, when he was 25 years old, he was suspended 40 games for domestic violence. It was the conclusion of an investigation of the Big leagues about the allegations made by his ex-wife, Melisa Reidy.
In a blog post, Reidy detailed the physical, mental and emotional abuse she suffered from Russell during their two-year marriage, which ended in divorce.
That was coupled with the fact that one of Reidy’s friends made accusations against Russell on Instagram, claiming that he had brutally attacked the woman in front of her two children.
There were other episodes of misconduct. Mallory Engstrom, the mother of Russell’s daughter, said the player “abandoned” the girl and accused him of failing to comply with court-ordered child support and that when he brought her money, he handed her $1 bills and coins.
Ultimately the weight of the accusations caused the end of Russell’s career in the majors. During his suspension Javier Báez moved from second base to shortstop and after the 2019 season the Cubs cut him from the team.
In 2020, convinced that he would not get any more offers to play in the MLB, he went to the Korean league and then to Mexico, where he has seen action in the winter and summer tournaments.
