He was born in Chula Vista, California, but has Mexican blood through the family of his father and coach, Enrique. The 1.90-tall infielder grew up in Arizona and played for many years in a league in Nogales, Sonora, The Athletic reported.
In his final season in high school, he hit .392 with 14 home runs and 45 RBIs and came close to breaking Adrian Gonzalez’s all-time home run record at Eastlake High School. In 26 games with the MLB Rookie League’s FCL Red Sox, he hit .275 with three homers and 17 RBIs.
