Santurce Crabbers return with new vigor to the winter league

The Santurce Cangrejeros are back to the Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League (Lbprc) in search of glory.

From the Hacienda Santa Ana, home of the Ron del Barrilito facilities, in Bayamón, the santurcina ninth presented the details and the team’s agenda for the 2021-2022 season of the winter league.

“Santurce is here and we come to recover the championship,” said the president of the Cangrejeros, Justo Moreno, during a press conference held on Thursday.

The ninth crab is back after not playing last year due to the covid-19 pandemic. But on November 6, when they host the Carolina Giants, at 6:10 pm, at the Hiram Bithorn Stadium, they will return with new vigor and almost a score of sponsors.

Moreno, who was accompanied by the mayor of San Juan, Miguel Romero, and the majority investor of the team, Tom Axon, offered multiple details of the team and the different activities that they will be carrying out for the fans.

From the serve, the Cangrejeros announced that they will dedicate the new season to former player Juan José “Tití” Beníquez, who played 17 seasons in the Major Leagues and 22 in the Lbprc, 18 with Santurce.

The leader will once again be José “Tony” Valentín, who will have Carmelo Martínez, José “Pito” Hernández, Javier Valentín, Héctor “Papo” Mercado, Hommy Castro, Kevin Torres and Alexis Cruz on his coaching staff.

As for the players, the bulk of the team will be native and Moreno stressed that “this year there will be a lot of player who has played the big circus (in reference to the Major Leagues).” Among them, he mentioned receivers Michael Pérez (Pittsburgh) and René Rivera (Washington).

“They have said they want to play and are going to participate with the Cangrejeros,” said Moreno, who also highlighted catcher prospect Roy Morales.

The infield players include Yariel González, Iván De Jesús, Jack López and Gabriel Cancel. In the outfield, the main prospect of Puerto Rican baseball Heliot Ramos will be from the opening day with two of the six to seven imported that the team will sign, David Hensley, Marty Costes and Daniel Palka.

The monticular corps will feature Xavier Cedeño, Leroy Cruz, Jason García, Fernando Cruz, Patrick Weigel and Bryan Bonnell, among others.

“There are two or three names that we are still shuffling about, who have Triple A or Major League experience. We are going to offer high quality baseball and that ensures that Santurce aspires to the championship, “said Moreno.

The Cangrejeros will wear six different uniforms during the season, including one that will wear the number 21 and that will be used on November 21 to dedicate that day to Roberto Clemente. Carolina will also join that activity, according to Moreno. In accordance with this initiative, the ninth cangrejera will have an event with the youth to honor Clemente.

This Saturday there will be a Fan Fest, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, in the capital stadium and that will culminate with a caravan throughout San Juan.

The winter league season will be vaccinated only. The use of a mask and physical distancing will be required.
