One of the greatest feats in the history of MLB is without a doubt the epic comeback of the Boston Red Sox versus the New York Yankees in the 2004 American League Championship Series, where they came back from a 3-0 deficit to later win the World Series and break the “Curse of the Bambino.” The truth is that much has been said about that feat, and as the years go by, more details emerge that are making it more legendary.
Recently, the so-called “Cro-Magnon Man,” Johnny Damon, spoke to the “Friday Beers” podcast, where he mentioned that leading up to Game 4 of the ALCS already down 3-0 in the series, they pretty much felt like they had nothing to lose and utility man Kevin Millar pulled out a bottle of Jack Daniels and the team had a few shots of whiskey before the game, a game that started the epic comeback and they didn’t stop drinking until they won the World Series.
It was tough (facing the 3-0 deficit), Kevin Millar stepped up and spoke, Nobody wanted to start taking our kids to school, we weren’t ready. We wanted to play a few more matches. Millar took out some shots of Jack Daniels and well, we had nothing to lose, so we went out on the field and believed in each other. We did it before Game 4, and 5, and 6 and 7. And then also in the World Series in Game 1, in 2, in 3, in 4.
As the adage goes, “the rest is history,” with the Red Sox coming from behind from a 3-0 loss to the Yankees to beat them in 7 games and finishing the job with a 4-0 sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series in order to finally break the Curse of the Bambino.
