Carlos Correa will move from the central United States to the Pacific coast.
The Puerto Rican shortstop will sign a massive $350 million, 13-year deal with the San Francisco Giants.
The information was reported during the early hours of Wednesday by Jeff Passan, of ESPN, and Mark Feinsand, of MLB.com. The deal has not been made official by the Giants.
The deal is the largest for a Puerto Rican player in Major League history. He surpasses the contract of $341 million and 10 years of his compatriot and also siore Francisco Lindor with the New York Mets signed last year.
It is also the fourth most lucrative guaranteed deal for a player in Major League Baseball. He’s behind Mike Trout with the Angels ($426.5 million), Mookie Betts with the Dodgers ($365 million) and Aaron Judge with the Yankees ($360 million).
Correa was coming off a three-year, $105.3 million deal with the Minnesota Twins, signed in his first free agency appearance. He earned $35 million in 2022, the best salary ever for an infielder.
The Twins were in a fight to retain the Saint Elizabethan. According to Jon Heyman of the NY Post, Minnesota offered Correa $285 million over 10 years.
Both the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets showed interest in the Puerto Rican.
The first pick of the MLB Player Draft in 2012 by the Houston Astros and the AL Rookie of the Year in 2015, Correa finished the season with a .291 batting average with 22 home runs and 64 RBIs, plus a .OPS+ of 140. .
28-year-old Correa has a World Series ring with the Astros in 2017. In 2021, he was a Gold Glove and a Platinum Glove.
The Giants are coming off a season in which they amassed an 81-81 mark after surprisingly in 2021 and momentarily unseating the Los Angeles Dodgers from the throne of the National League West. San Francisco last won the World Series in 2014.
Outside of Correa, the Giants have bolstered their pitching with the signings of Sean Manaea, Mitch Haniger and Ross Stripling. They had to retain the opener Carlos Rodón.
