Carlos Correa will be the only Puerto Rican in the All-Star Game

The Puerto Rican shortstop for the Houston Astros, Carlos Correa, was selected as a reserve for the All-Star Games on July 13 in Colorado, according to the roster of both teams revealed Sunday by MLB.

Correa is the only Puerto Rican chosen, although wide receivers Yadier Molina and Martín ‘Machete’ Maldonado and second baseman Javier Báez were among the leaders in fan voting.

The 10 starters on the American and National League teams were chosen based on fan votes. No Puerto Rican was chosen among the headlines.

The reserves and pitchers were chosen jointly by MLB and the vote of the players.

Among those chosen as reserve of the American League is Correa along with also shortstop for the Toronto Blue Jays, Bo bichette. The starting siore of the American League will be Xander Bogaertsof the Boston Red Sox.

It is Correa’s second All-Star selection. His first was in 2017. In 2020 there was no All-Star Game.

Correa is hitting .298 with 16 homers, 52 RBIs and 61 runs scored. Among the shortstops in the American League, Correa ranks first in home runs, RBIs and on average to reach base. He’s second in batting average and runs scored.

There are 34 players who will debut in an All-Star Game, evenly split between the two teams, MLB reported.

Molina was not chosen as a reserve even though he received the second-highest number of fan votes among NL receivers. The reserve chosen by MLB and the players was JT Realmuto, of the Philadelphia Phillies. The holder of the National League will be Buster posey, of the San Francisco Giants.

Baez was also not chosen as a reserve. Instead they were chosen second base: Ozzie albies, the Atlanta Braves, and Jake Cronenworthby the San Diego Padres. The holder of the National League will be Adam Frazierof the Pittsburgh Pirates.

There were no Puerto Rican pitchers chosen by MLB. Minnesota Twins starter José Berríos and New York Mets closer Edwin Díaz have performed well in the first half of the season.
