Jimmy Smith says he found out he was going to be fired from WWE before Monday’s edition of Raw.
On Thursday, WWE announced a shake-up of their commentary teams and it was revealed that Smith would be replaced by Kevin Patrick in the commentary booth on Raw. Smith had been working as a play-by-play commentator for the show since May 26, 2021.
On an episode of his Unlocking the Cage podcast, Smith noted that Triple H accidentally let him know on Monday that he was being let go.
“I can tell this story, why not? Triple H accidentally told me before the Monday show,” he said. “He messed up and he told me, it wasn’t his intention.”
“What happened was, I was doing my preparation for the show and we had a production meeting and on the air Seth Rollins had cut a promo saying that DC [Daniel Cormier] he hates Riddle as much as I do. So everyone in the production meeting turned to me and said, “What did you mean? Do you have some kind of personal problem?’ I’m the MMA guy, right? I said, “Well, Riddle has been critical of fighter pay in the UFC, and Daniel Cormier is considered something of a company man. So, I say, ‘That could be what he was talking about.’ It was the only thing that came to mind.”
“Before the show, I go up to Riddle and say, ‘Do you and DC have some kind of dispute or problem? And he’s like, ‘No, no, we’re fine.’ He may be mad that I beat Jon Jones and he couldn’t.”
“He beat Jon Jones twice in New York, whatever,” Smith continued. “So he says, ‘He may be mad because I beat Jon Jones twice.’ He said, ‘Oh man, that’s a good line, we have to use that.’ So I went to see Triple H, who was there, and I said, “I just talked to Riddle and he told me that he had beaten Jon Jones twice.” And Triple H says: “Okay, give that note to [Michael] Cole”. And I said, “Why would I have to give Cole that note if I’m going to call the fight on Saturday? Oh, I’m not narrating on Saturday. Oh, I’m probably fired.’”
“I knew basically the entire Monday night show that I wasn’t going to come back. So when I got the call on Tuesday, I wasn’t particularly surprised.”
