Recently, the self-proclaimed ‘Best in the World’, CM Punk, was participating in the AEW Unrestricted Podcast with Aubrey Edwards and Tony Schiavone. Punk was remembering some of the brightest moments of his career, in which – of course – he could not be left out the impressive promo he gave on RAW during an episode made in June 2011.
CM Punk talks backstage reaction to his pipebomb in WWE
Punk strongly attacked WWE and its policies, Vince McMahon, his sons, great figures such as Dwayne Johnson, John Cena and Hulk Hogan, in addition to mentioning the Ring Of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling companies, and say hi to Colt Cabana; facts that caused WWE to turn off the microphones before he could finish venting.
The truth is that Punk’s speech caught people’s attention, and made many fans look again at the WWE product. The Chicago native spoke about what happened backstage after the infamous promo:
“When I was done, I remember walking down the ramp and thinking ‘okay, I can’t go through the curtain because I just gave this promo; if I go through the curtain – smart decision to take care of the kayfabe – I would have to hit someone. ‘ So I went backstage to the side of the stage. That was one of the things that made people think ‘Hmmm, there’s something strange going on here’. And when I got back, there was no one there. ” Punk stated.
“That part is usually full of people going from one place to another between the corridors, but it was empty. I remember thinking ‘God what is going on here?’ so I noticed that they were all in the tunnel waiting to see me come through the curtain because they all thought the same thing, something like ‘Man, this is going to get really serious’. And the first person I see is Chef Robert Irvine who was there with Gail Kim. And he just looks at me like I’m exhausted after a chest training session and says ‘That was amazing!’ He is a person who does not necessarily consume the product, but he liked that very much. Then I saw Chris Masters, he looked at me and said ‘Did you hear what Punk just said?’ and I said ‘Chris, it’s me’ and he came out of his stupor and said ‘Oh, it’s you. They’re going to fire you friend ‘and I just left. It was a weird scene, I didn’t know that it would turn into something so big, but after seeing those reactions, I knew that I had something very big on my hands. ” CM Punk concludes.
