With the tie, Uruguay remains in fourth place in the positions with 9 points, while Peru is ninth with only 5 units and seems to start saying goodbye to Qatar-2022.

On Sunday, Peru will host Venezuela and next Thursday it will visit superleader Brazil in Recife.

Meanwhile, Uruguay will host Bolivia on Sunday and Ecuador on Thursday, both games at the Campeón del Siglo stadium in Montevideo.

Intense grief

Peru started the game with a good team game to seek their second win in qualifying, on the grass of the National Stadium with 8,000 fans in the stands.

The Inca team with a 4-2-3-1 system came out to break the solid rival defense. With Captain Paolo Guerrero and André Carrillo the Incas pressed the exit from the bottom of the Celeste.

Without their historic goals, the Uruguayan team with forwards Maxi Gómez and Brian Rodríguez did the same for the wings against the Peruvians.

With stopped balls, Peru pressed with intensity to Uruguay.

In the 24th minute, the Celta de Vigo midfielder of Spain, Renato Tapia, scored the 1-0 for Peru with a Chilean shot after an assist from Guerrero after a corner kick.

With the score against, Uruguay turned to attack.

At 29 minutes, the creative De Arrascaeta with a left shot from the center of the area scored the equalizer for the Uruguayan squad, also taking advantage of an error by the local defense.

After equality, both squads had an intense round-trip duel, but did not reach the goals.

“We played a round match, but we had to finish, in these matches we have to kill,” Guerrero said after the match.

Solid sky defense

In addition, the Inca team led by Argentine coach Ricardo Gareca came out determined to break the tie, developing a more intense football.

But Uruguay with the defender Nahitan Nández and Gómez sought to surprise with counterattacks using the bands well.

At 63, the Peruvian midfielder Yoshimar Yotún took a left shot that was saved by Fernando Muslera.

Between 66 and 71, Uruguayan coach Oscar Tabárez made four changes to recover the midfield and preserve the result.

On his side, Gareca put Wilder Cartagena and Sergio Peña on the field at 72.

With the changes, the Peruvian team regained power in attack, but its players found themselves with a solid Uruguayan defense.

At 84, Carrillo launched a right-footed shot that went wide.

At 86, Gareca brought in forward Raúl Ruidíaz to give the team more offensive power.

In the last minutes of the game, the Peruvians put the Uruguayans in their field, but they did not reach the net. (D)
