Movistar and DAZN will give LaLiga from 2022 to 2027

LaLiga has announced the award of television rights for the next five seasons for 4,950 million euros. Movistar and DAZN take over the rights. The first operator will broadcast a total of 5 games per day plus three full games and the OTT DAZN will have another five games per day. “This represents a small increase in audiovisual income compared to the equivalent lots in the previous cycle,” says LaLiga. Tebas that was considering a decrease or increase of around 2% compared to the previous auction, has managed to increase the award by 1%. In this way, it goes from entering 980 million per season to 990 million.

The Movistar + and DAZN lots

Movistar + and DAZN have taken Option D among the different proposals. Both will have exclusively (except alliance between them) five games per day, including the open game (which will not be exclusive and will be marketed in February or March 2022), each will issue one of the two Classic Garters (Movistar will cast the second round and DAZN the first) and they will be able to broadcast a maximum of each of them 18 Real Madrid matches and as many Barcelona matches. In addition, neither will be able to broadcast the round trip of Real Madrid or Barcelona with any of the following clubs: Valencia, Atlético, Athletic and Sevilla. Each operator will alternately choose their five games each day.

What’s more, Movistar is done with three exclusive days. They will have to be in September, December and March or April, being prior to an international week-long day. In each of them, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atlético will have to face the first six classified from the previous season or against Valencia, Athletic and Betis, in case they did not remain in those positions the previous season.

The award

This Monday, at 12:00 in the morning, the envelopes of each of the proposals were opened to win the lots of the LaLiga Santander matches. This procedure was carried out at the headquarters of the Higher Sports Council in the presence of a member of this body and a notary public. Subsequently, these proposals have been taken to the LaLiga Television Control body.

Companies such as Movistar have participated in this bid, which has had in possession in recent seasons the rights of LaLiga, Mediapro, Relevent and DAZN. Unlike recent contests, LaLiga has presented a more varied offer with the aim of expanding the number of offers in a market that is tending to decline. For this, it has presented seven lots with different options and has given the option to bid for the rights of three, four or five seasons. The competition for the Second Division, Horeca (for the hospitality industry) and the open game are still pending. “They will foreseeably go out to tender between February and March 2022,” the employers’ association reported in a statement.

Despite the opening of bids and the provisional award, tThe procedure has not yet been closed. Until December 20 at 12.00, allegations can be submitted to correct the defects or omissions and on December 22, the bids will be evaluated again and the tender will be awarded. It will be 20 business days after the award when the contract is signed.

LaLiga highlights the award of 4.950 million euros in a declining market, although it does not detail how much Movistar and DAZN pay. “With this result, LaLiga has managed to maintain audiovisual revenues, in a context in which most of the major European leagues have peaked and are reducing their revenues in recent cycles and in which many industry experts predicted significant decreases “. And adds: “The possibility that this time the offers will be for 5 years contributes to greater stability in the medium term and creates greater certainty among the successful bidders to invest in the content. In this way, LaLiga matches what they already do in other leagues and major sports competitions, reinforcing their competitiveness. “In the rest of Europe, the latest auctions ended with a reduction in revenues for Serie A (-5%), Bundesliga (-5%) and Ligue 1 (-4%) The Premier, which reduced its income by 8% in the penultimate auction, managed to stabilize and not decrease in the last one.

“LaLiga is satisfied to continue its contractual relationship with Telefónica as a partner of an important part of its audiovisual rights and welcomes DAZN, the world’s largest sports OTT operator, to our competition, hoping that together we will be able to continue making Spanish professional football grow “, the employer’s association ends its statement.

Where can football be seen from next season?

LaLiga has awarded First Division television rights for the next five seasons (from 2022-23 to 2026-279) for 4,950 million euros (990 per season) to Movistar + and DAZN. The television rights of the Second Division matches will be auctioned between February and March 2022.

Movistar will broadcast five exclusive matches every weekend and, in addition, three days in full. While DAZN will offer its clients the other five remaining matches per day. The award of Movistar and DAZN may lead to the continuation of the association that both operators have to give football both in full. That is to say, that the subscribers of any of the two platforms can see the whole day. The OTT is integrated into several of Telefónica’s payment packages, and the subscribers of the latter operator can watch the Premier and MotoGP matches, the rights of which are in the possession of DAZN. And vice versa, since Movistar has ceded Formula 1 to DAZN. An alliance that could continue with this purchase of LaLiga Santander.
