“Canada Soccer informed FIFA of the decision made by the city of Montreal to withdraw from the selection process for the 2026 FIFA World Cup venue.. FIFA continues to work closely with the host associations of Canada, the United States and Mexico in this highly competitive selection process that involves a variety of very strong and diverse candidates in all three countries, ”the statement read.
Montreal was one of the three Canadian cities, which had been named as candidates to host the tri-national World Cup in 2026 and the Olympic Stadium in Montreal was shaping up to be one of the chosen properties. After declining Montreal’s candidacy, Canada Soccer released a statement, in which they express their support for the two possible Canadian venues, in Edmonton and Toronto.
