Mavys Álvarez revealed the reasons why the relationship with Diego Maradona ended definitively: “My family saved my life”

Mavys Álvarez broke the silence about her years with Diego Maradona

During the years that he was living in Havana to treat his drug addiction, Diego Maradona had a violent courtship with Mavys Alvarez. The history, which was first revealed by Teleshow, it did not go unnoticed anywhere in the world. She was 16 when she was introduced to the player. Today the age difference and the disparity of power, possibilities and money put in context that it was an abusive relationship.

More than twenty years after the first meeting, Mavys broke the silence and gave an interview to Mario J. Pentón, news reporter America news of the chain America TeVé from Miami. The shipment was published in chapters that revealed the details of his relationship with the footballer. From their first meeting, which led to an abusive relationship that led to, among other things, to drug use and cosmetic surgery to modify your body, in pursuit of achieving a sexier image until investigating the intimate relationship between Maradona and Fidel Castro, which allowed him to leave the island to attend the star’s farewell match, held on November 10, 2001 in La Bombonera.

In the final part of the interview, Mavys talked about how he distanced himself from Maradona after four years. “He spent long periods outside of Cuba. At that time I was moving away from drugs. I was clean, but I took refuge in alcohol “, he pointed out, and explained how he rebuilt his life. “It was at that time, when I was increasingly lonely, that I met my current husband. I started a relationship with him. He helped me get out of that world. He was patient and accompanied me in the most difficult part of my life “, he claimed.

Maradona’s bond with Álvarez cooled to the point of being permanently lost and they had no further contact. As interpreted by the Cuban, it may be due his refusal to participate in orgies organized by the athlete. And as the last postcard from hell that he lived with the footballer, he referred to a communication he had with Diego.

One night he called me. I said: what do you want and I hung up on him. I was pregnant with my current husband. I feared for a long time that my daughter, as a result of that relationship, was ill because of my drug addiction. But thank God it was not like that. My family saved me ”, she expressed relieved. At this point, the journalist Mario Pentón asked him if he wanted to have a child with Maradona: “In my illusion yes, I thought about it. I took pregnancy tests on my missed periods. I was not well. He wanted to have children “, revealed the woman, and finished in tears: “My children are not Maradona’s children.”

Then, the journalist showed him a shirt of the Argentine National Team that Maradona had dedicated to him, a model similar to the one used in his farewell party attended by the woman and another white, an alternative to Napoli, where he read the dedication. “For my impossible love, with all my love and Bolivian regret,” he read straight from the shirt. “He made me a dedication every time, he was very detailed, yes”, Mavys said, before entering the final part of the report that passed through tears.

“Diego made a tremendous fortune.” Did he leave you money?

“No, he never left me anything.”

“He never cared about your future?”

-Any

“Have you thought about suing him?” Not him anymore, but his estate, or his family?

—I thought that maybe I had left something, I don’t know why I made that little illusion in my mind, that from so much damage it did me, I would have thought of me even at some point.

“What did you feel when Diego Armando Maradona died?”

“Yes, it hurt.” We experienced many things, there was a lot of madness, a lot of debauchery. But I did feel it.

“Do you remember him as someone you loved or someone who hurt you?”

“Both are conflicting positions.” Thanks to him I learned things that I could not have known. But I also experienced things that affected me and to this day they continue to affect me. The nerves, I left one addiction and fell into another. I was a time to be able to free myself completely. It was very hard. The concern that my oldest daughter had a problem.

“Do you have a message for those young Cuban women who can meet a Maradona on their way?”

—Think about it. They can live beautiful moments, but it is very hard if something like what I experienced happens to them. I did feel good at one point, but after I learned about drugs, everything changed in my life. And nothing was for the better.

Abusive relationship

Although the link between Mavys Álvarez and Diego Maradona began in Cuba when the woman was 16 years old, and determining whether or not there was corruption of minors would depend on the island’s laws in those years, she came to Argentina accompanying him. According to the laws of our country, When a person of legal age goes out with a minor, each case must be differentiated according to the age of the alleged victim. The criminal lawyer Raquel Hermida Legend, specialist in sexual crimes, explained to Teleshow what happens in each age group.

Under 13 years old. “Any type of sexual or groping relationship is considered abuse, it does not matter if the minor says ‘I want’: there is no consent in children under 13 years of age. It is a crime, and includes between six and 15 years in prison ”.

Minors between 13 and 16 years old. “In these cases, the relationship is called seduction abuse. There is a consent, but it is a flawed consent, somehow seduced. The woman does not have finished her self-esteem and the abuser convinces her saying she’s cute. The person is forming, and is self-doubtful, has low self-esteem, you do not have your consent. In addition, this abuse can have its aggravations, such as in cases where there is coexistence, bonding, care or care relationships. Generally, the victim does not consider himself a victim, it is likely that he agrees. The sentence is less than in the previous case”.

Minors between 16 and 18 years old. “The State continues to protect them in two fundamental crimes: corruption of minors and prostitution.”

At this point, Hermida Leyenda argues that these crimes would fit within the framework of the relationship between Mavys and Mardona. “This he exercised absolutely, because from his story it comes out that she interrupted her adolescence to enter a life that is not normal for a teenager. It is a crime that is well established, because there is money involved, support that he does to his family. With cocaine there is not only corruption but abuse, because she cannot consent drugged. Mavys says that Maradona did not want to take drugs alone, but her state of unconsciousness allowed him to do acts that, being conscious, she could say no “.

What does corruption of minors mean? “Disrupt the normal development of a minor or adolescent. Everything happened here because once she’s drugged, everything happened. Drugged, she cannot consent. And then he says that he approached him for the drug: I wasn’t in love, I was addicted”.

The lawyer also explains that in the event that “A healthy 17-year-old woman has a relationship with older men, if there is no money, drugs, or participation of third parties or compensation, it is not abuse”. Nevertheless, how many years separate the two (more than 20, in this case) could be an analyzable factor for Justice. When there is so much difference, the issue of power must be analyzed: It is rare for a 16-year-old woman to have sex with a 40 ″ man.

Although there is no money involved directly, but there are gifts, for example to the family, these would be “partners in crime”. In addition, Hermida Leyenda clarifies that, according to Mavys’ testimony, the relationship “does not begin as an abuse but as a matter of seduction, but there is always power, and that is called corruption of minors”.

Sabrina Cartabia, former lawyer of Thelma Fardin, agreed on the legal point and added: “Beyond that, it is important to reflect on shared social responsibilities. Why is it not just about a determined and isolated person who has reprehensible behavior. In this type of case it is usually observed that there are environments, that surround powerful and successful people who facilitate excesses, where limits do not exist ”.

“This is typical of our culture where success and the total lack of care generates that certain people can break the rules established in they even have the endorsement of the institutions to do so, with environments that encourage and celebrate that act without limits. Even though this can harm other people, like the then teenager, Mavys. In this sense, girls, boys and adolescents must be socially respected and cared for, not only by their family but by the whole of society and especially by institutions. Here he observes that all that failed and she was exposed to situations that were very difficult to handle and process for a young woman who was building her autonomy, ”he closed.
