Independiente del Valle qualified this Wednesday for the final of the 2022 South American Cup, by crushing Peruvian Melgar in the semifinals.

The striped team from Pichincha, who won 3-0 last week in Ecuador, won by the same score (0-3) tonight at the UNSA Monumental stadium in Arequipa. The aggregate: 6-0.

Lautaro Ariel Díaz, at 28 minutes, scored Independiente’s first goal on Peruvian soil. He did it with the assistance of Júnior Sornoza, who controlled the ball and served the scorer.

Diaz himself expanded at minute 53 after capitalizing on the visit with a side kick.

Defender Luis Segovia, with a shot from outside the area, put the icing on the cake in the 87th minute.

The Ecuadorian cast waits for a Brazilian rival for the definition in Córdoba (Argentina) on October 1. This will come out of Thursday’s duel between Sao Paulo and Atlético Goianiense.

It will be the second Copa Sudamericana final for Independiente, who already won the tournament in 2019; meanwhile, it will be his fourth international final, considering the 2016 Libertadores and the 2020 Recopa.

Supported by his fans, Melgar started the match with totally aggressive football against a rival who came out to defend his comfortable result achieved in the first leg in Quito, where he thrashed 3-0.

With his striker and Argentine captain Bernardo Cuesta, and strikers Luis Iberico and Kevin Quevedo, Melgar appealed to good plays to break the rival’s iron defense, but his efforts were in vain and were nullified by his defenders.

At 7 minutes, defender Paolo Reyna took a shot that was saved by goalkeeper Moisés Ramírez.

Independiente, with Argentines Lorenzo Faravelli, Lautaro Díaz and veteran midfielder Cristian Pellerano, sought to surprise the local team with counterattacks, taking advantage of their defensive errors.

After the first 20 minutes, the red and black players began to fall into despair as the clock ticked down and the rival goal was not opened.

At minute 28, in a surprising counterattack, the Argentine striker Díaz with a cross from the left scored the 1-0 for the Negriazules after an excellent assist from midfielder Sornoza. The goal silenced thousands of local fans who arrived at the Monumental stands.

With the goal against him, Melgar pressed the accelerator and fell into inaccuracies in search of overcoming a score that left him with no chance of qualifying.

In the complement, the team led by the Argentine Anselmi went on the attack to settle the game with striker Díaz becoming a real nightmare for the local defense.

At 53, Díaz scored the 2-0 and his brace with a strong right cross after an assist from midfielder Marco Angulo.

But Melgar did not lower his arms and persisted in search of the discount, but his attackers ran into a solid rival defense that worked very disciplined.

At 61, Argentine coach Pablo Lavallén de Melgar made two changes to recover the team’s offensive line.

The León del Sur had lost the midfield to a solvent and much superior rival.

At 66, coach Anselmi made two changes, among them he took out the striker Díaz to secure the score that classified him again to a South American final.

In the last minutes of the game, Independiente continued to press for the win. And so, at 87, the defender Segovia with a right shot from outside the area put definitive figures for the Ecuadorian team.
