Defender Sporting going through a delicate moment since he descended to the Second division, a category that at first seemed something temporary for a team with its history, but the truth is that the violet has gone from bad to worse and in the last hours it was left without a technician, after the resignation of Leonel Rocco due to problems with the squad that led the players to refuse to train.
Bad weather as a precedent
Tuerto’s bad streak comes from before Rocco, who is the fourth coach in a couple of years after the passage of Alejandro Orfila, Gregorio Pérez and Eduardo Acevedo. There was an event that triggered the crisis of the last hours. DT had resolved separate Andrés Lamas from the rest of the squad And this was not liked at all by their teammates, so the violet players decided not to train this Saturday at the club, although they did do it on their own at the Carrasco Sports Center.
The origin of this issue, fueled by the bad results that the club has obtained, has been distant for a few weeks when there was a fight between Martín Correa, Omar Pouso (technical assistant) and Pablo López. The atmosphere was already heated and in the middle of it, the violet faced Juventud de Las Piedras last Tuesday. After leading 3-1, they tied it on the final after Rocco stopped a line of five that Captain Lamas (on the substitute bench) did not like. The player let him know.
The next day the team went to train and things did not improve. There were more interdictions between players and coaching staff, after which Rocco decided to separate Zurdo Lamas from the rest of the team due to the development of what had been a practice with many complaints and a tackle against a teammate a little out of place. But the footballers did not like this determination to do without one of their references. There the tension began to increase, the rest of the squad announced that they would not train without their captain, so to try to calm things down and reflect, the leadership gave them free on Thursday.
Support for Rocco and more measures
The board met on Friday to discuss this issue and unanimously determined that it would support Rocco in his decisions and in office. In addition, it was considered to determine measures: if this Saturday the squad trained without Lamas everything could return to normal, but if not, the event would have its consequences.
This Saturday morning, both the Defensor board of directors and the players met with the Mutual of Professional Footballers at the Arsuaga Complex. After a long talk, led by the club’s referents, the players stated that they would not train any more until Leonel Rocco ceased to be the club’s coach.
With this decision made by the squad, the DT did not have many options so he proceeded to make his position available so that the board could define what to do, since he could not fight against a united squad. Without having much room to proceed, the leadership accepted Rocco’s proposal to step aside, and at this moment they are studying the next steps to take. One of the measures would consist of removing some players from the squad, although it is not yet an official decision.
They are also looking for a new technician, although some names are already ringing.
