MADRID – Atlético de Madrid want to continue counting on Héctor Herrera for another season despite the interest of AS Roma in his signing, according to different sources informed ESPN.
The Mexican international has been linked to José Mourinho’s team in the last few hours but club sources suggest that, except for an unexpected turn, Herrera will continue in Wanda Metropolitano because he is considered a “very important” player.
The 31-year-old midfielder has not managed to establish himself as the undisputed starter in Diego Simeone’s eleven but the Argentine greatly values the alternatives he offers in midfield.
The Italian press has speculated that Atlético de Madrid will use Herrera in a possible exchange operation with Spaniard Gonzalo Villar.
However, ESPN has learned that it was AS Roma that asked Herrera during those negotiations. However, Gonzalo Villar, 22, would only land in Madrid if Saúl Ñíguez ends up leaving.
Chelsea and Manchester United continue to speak with Atlético for a loan with a possible purchase option on the rojiblanco squad but for now neither has reached an agreement with the colchoneros.
Herrera arrived with Porto’s release card in the 2019-20 season and is completing his third season at Atleti. In the previous two he played 27 and 21 games respectively, alternating starts with substitutions.
On a personal level, the international for Mexico was able to leave last summer when he had several offers from Russia and the USA, among others, but he has always prioritized staying in Madrid under the orders of Cholo Simeone.
