Gerardo Martino will be operated on and will not travel with El Tri to Costa Rica and Panama

The Tri coach had a retinal detachment and will be treated, which will prevent him from traveling to the visiting commitments of the Mexican National Team

Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino will not travel to the games that Mexico will play against Costa Rica and Panama, as a visitor, in the Concacaf qualifier, because he will be operated on because he had a retinal detachment.

The Tricolor coach was on the bench in the game against Jamaica, following some medical recommendations and seeking to spend as much time as possible with the team, since he will not be able to travel tomorrow, to face the next two games on the way to Qatar 2022.

The coach himself acknowledged, in a press conference, that he will undergo surgery due to a detached retina and that causes him to have to rest, so he will not travel to Costa Rica and Panama.

“Tomorrow I will undergo surgery for retinal detachment,” said ‘Tata’ Martino, after the game against Jamaica, at Azteca.

Once it is operated, The coach of the Mexican National Team must rest and wait for the result of the surgery, to know how long he will not be able to travel by plane.

A similar case occurred in the NFL in 2017, when Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer underwent retinal surgery and was unable to travel by plane for six weeks, on medical advice.

Gerardo Martino’s place on the Tricolor bench will be taken by Jorge Theiler, his assistant in the Mexican National Team. The ‘Tata’ has only been absent in two games of the Mexican team and in those commitments the team could not achieve victory in regular time.

The Tricolor has the two remaining games of the tie in September and returns to activity in October, to face Canada. Honduras and El Salvador.
